FAQ:
Q. Can you do school visits for free?
A. If you are part of Scott’s publisher-sponsored tour schedule, then YES! Please contact me to see if that is a possibility for you.
If you would like Scott to appear at an event that is not part of his scheduled tour, please contact Jennifer (events@jscottsavage.com) for availability and cost. Scott has rates for full day, half day, and evening events. If he has to travel more than one hour, he needs to charge for travel, which may include mileage, meals, airfare, and hotel. We do everything we can to keep your costs as low as possible, and might suggest splitting the expenses between multiple entities. And we will be as flexible as possible to stay within your budget.
Q. Is there a minimum number of books we have to buy?
A. NO! You don’t have to buy any books to be able to host a school visit. We always work through a local bookstore to do a signing on Scott’s last day in an area, and to offer pre-sales to your students and staff, often at a discount. We understand that not everyone has the time to attend an evening signing at the bookstore, and offer pre-sales as a convenience to your parents and staff.
Q. What grades does Scott usually present to?
A. His 45 minute assembly is geared to multi-grade groups from 2nd to 6th grade. He does not include secondary schools in his tour schedule unless by special request.
Q. What’s so great about an author visit? Why should my school bother?
A. Something magical happens when students connect with an author. An engaging presentation can inspire even reluctant readers to pick up a book. Scott understands that instruction time is at a premium in schools, so his presentation is more than a guy talking about himself and his books, or doing a reading. He always has a theme based on his current book that is designed to inspire students to change the world, and an activity where students learn the four basic parts of a story and participate to create a group story. Students laugh while they learn, and we’ve often heard from educators that students return to class excited to create stories of their own.
Q. Can Scott do virtual visits? Writing classes and conferences? After school book clubs? Library and literacy events? Book festivals? Keynote addresses?
A. Yes to all! Scott has been presenting, teaching, speaking, and inspiring in libraries, conferences, and other events, both live and virtual, since 2002. He was the Writer in Residence at a Title I K8 Charter School and created grade-level appropriate writing programs, and has taught writing classes to both kids and adults. He is great on panels or as a moderator. If you want to schedule something other than an elementary school assembly, please reach out!
If you have any specific questions or concerns, please feel free to email Jennifer at events@jscottsavage.com. We can even set up a phone call or a Zoom meeting. Just let me know what works best for you.
